History of the New Year's Day

This event has been a tradition for the hardcore (and the hung over) for about 30 years. What better way to bring in the New Year, and show your commitment to the sport, than by going for a ride?

Due to the variable weather, the event is usually fairly short road ride, starting and ending at the clubhouse. Hot drinks and food are always served. Previous events have included dirt bikes running trailer plates in the snow; riders with “Happy New Year” party hats taped onto their helmets and blowing noisemakers; and a sidecar rig needing a push to get up the icy hill in back of the old clubhouse.

When the weather is fair, there are usually 20 or more riders. Dual sport bikes predominate when the roads turn to slush or were recently salted. Whatever the turnout, it is always a good time.

Event Comments:
2015 NEW YEAR’S DAY RUN

Another year passed through our lives with 2015 starting out the right way, with the GVMC New Year’s Day Run. The ride and event went very well. We hosted the usual club members, friends and acquaintances as participants and some new friends. In total we had about 24 participants, some dualsport riders, some road riders and some car drivers. The run was about 2 hours long and the weather allowed everyone on a bike to complete the whole route easily although even with 5 degree temps, there were a few with cold fingers. A small price to pay for glory on New Years Day. The indoor poker run produced four winners who went home with prize money either as a portion, all or more than they paid as their entry fee. To change the format a bit the 2016 New Year’s Day ride will feature a car rally format for road bikes and cars alike. We hope you can join us next year and ring in 2016 in style.
