History of the New Year's Day

This event has been a tradition for the hardcore (and the hung over) for about 30 years. What better way to bring in the New Year, and show your commitment to the sport, than by going for a ride?

Due to the variable weather, the event is usually fairly short road ride, starting and ending at the clubhouse. Hot drinks and food are always served. Previous events have included dirt bikes running trailer plates in the snow; riders with “Happy New Year” party hats taped onto their helmets and blowing noisemakers; and a sidecar rig needing a push to get up the icy hill in back of the old clubhouse.

When the weather is fair, there are usually 20 or more riders. Dual sport bikes predominate when the roads turn to slush or were recently salted. Whatever the turnout, it is always a good time.

Event Comments:
GVMC New Year's Day Run

Another year passed through our lives with 2016 starting out the right way, with the GVMC New Year’s Day Run. The ride and event went very well. We hosted the usual club members, friends and acquaintances as participants and some new friends. In total we had about 23 participants, some dualsport riders, some road riders and some car drivers. The run was about 2 hours long and the weather allowed everyone on a bike to complete the whole route although there were some very cold riders as they started out at a –2 degree temperature made even colder with the fog.. Some riders were hard spent to feel their fingers in the cold. A small price to pay for glory on New Year’s Day. Cards for a poker hand were drawn at 5 check points including two at the Clubhouse at the beginning and end of the Run producing three winners who went home with prize money either as a portion, all or more than they paid as their entry fee.

Winners were 1st Place – Bill MacDonald – 2nd Place – Jim Sloat – 3rd Place - Lena

Thanks to Wes J for planning the event, Donna S. for managing the event on the day and cooking dinner – Julie B for providing kitchen help and Mike C for helping with cleanup.

Plans are already in motion for the 2017 New Year’s Day Run. We hope you can join us next year and ring in 2017 in style!
