Event Comments:
2016 PISTON RUN AND CROSS COUNTRY RACE

This was a two day event with the Piston Run being held on Saturday Sept, 17 and the Cross Country Race on Sunday the 18th. Both races were PNWMA championship events with the Piston Run scheduled as round 3 and the Canadian Cross Country Championship on Sunday as round 4.

Saturday got off to a soggy start and the weather got worse as the day progressed with the rain cycling between moderately heavy and torrential downpour all day long. But the heavy rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors, nor did it bother the event organizers – motorcyclists are a hardy lot.

After the sign-up was completed racing got under way. The racers started on the Bench Road and took off like a pack of hounds chasing a rabbit, each trying to be the first to turn off the road and onto the single track trails that would comprise the majority of the race. A couple of hours later they returned to the staging area, wet, covered in mud, grinning from ear to ear, and enthusiastically discussing the adventures they had on the course. A good time was had by all.

The weather cleared up on Sunday for the Canadian Cross Country Championship, and riding conditions were ideal. The previous day’s rain had soaked the trails so there was no dust and the racers had excellent visibility all day long. The race started on the Bench road but unlike the Piston Run, which had the racers doing two or three laps depending on their class and lap times, Sunday’s race consisted of only one lap with the A riders doing a 60 kilometer loop and the B riders 40 kilometers.

The Piston Run was won by Trystan Hart who also won the Cross Country on Sunday and was crowned the Masters Champion for the season. Congratulations to Trystan; well done!

Thanks go out to all the GVMC volunteers who contributed their time and efforts to make this year’s event a success. Thanks to Ray Keller, Chris Carey, Dwight Harris and all the others who did such a great job of cutting new trails and cleaning up existing ones for the race, and who worked tirelessly throughout the event doing whatever needed to be done. Thanks to Julie, Judy, Verdene and the others who manned the sign-up table. Thanks to Donna and her crew for the pancake breakfasts and the toasted sandwiches they provided throughout the day – mmmm delicious. Thanks to Bill Talley for taking care of the first aid and being everywhere he was needed throughout the day. Thanks to PNWMA personnel who helped with the organization and timing of the events, and thanks to Daytona Motorsports for the commemorative mugs they provided.

The 2016 Piston Run was a complete success; can’t wait to do it all again next year.
