History Of The Routledge Run

This event was started in 1954, dedicated to Bob Routledge, a respected motorcycle mechanic and one of the signers of the 1939 GVMC incorporation. The original perpetual trophy features a pewter figure of a German army dispatch rider on a BMW. This may have been a souvenir brought back by returning soldiers after World War II, but it’s exact origin and significance is a mystery.

Traditionally, the event was held as a Saturday ride to a campground, with a field meet on Sunday. Field meets involved tests of rider skill, such as riding a length of 2x4, throwing darts from a moving bike, rolling a barrel with the front wheel, a slow race (last one across the finish line wins, touch a foot down you’re out), and any other crowd pleasing stunts the organizers could dream up.

The field meets gradually lost their appeal, and with the rise in dual sport riding, the event was given a fresh approach. The Routledge Run has in recent years been successful as a two-day ride, with street riders and dual sport riders taking separate routes to an overnight campout. The camaraderie and good times continue.

Event Comments:
2019 65th Annual GVMC Routledge Run was an event that surpassed expectations with 27 participants for not only the weather, but the group that participated and the route for both Adventure Touring and the Road Ride.

This year’s event saw riders and event participants head to Clinton BC for Friday and Saturday night. The main ride events were on Saturday morning. The Adventure Touring route took the 18 riders through Deadman Vidette Road to the backside of Loon Lake and High Hume to Kamloops and back. The Road Ride had 3 options, a trip to Lillooet for lunch, a meandering ride through Sheridan, Watch, Deka and other 70 mile to 100 mile house area lakes, or a trip over the Little Fort Hwy 24 to Barriere and around through Kamloops and Cache Creek and back.

At the end of the day Saturday, all riders and participants headed to Downing Provincial Park where the hosts greeted riders with a cold one and a dinner of a 9 oz. NY steak, baked potato, cucumber & tomato wedges and Pie for dessert. The weather was near perfect and after dinner many stayed around to enjoy the camaraderie before heading the short 12-minute ride back to Clinton for the night and then to return home on the Sunday.
