Vancouver Harley Davidson dealer Fred Deeley is given credit for starting the “300 Miler” in 1930. It was a true test of man and machine in those days, held on gravel and dirt roads, with many riders finishing long after dark. Photos of the 1938 start, taken at Stanley Park, show a long line of smiling riders on Indians, Harleys and British bikes, wearing leather helmets and peaked caps, all with numbered vests bearing a sponsor’s name (“Export”).
In 1948 it was re-named the “Caribou Trails”, and went through many changes over the years. Often it was held as a one-day enduro, sometimes a two-day ride, or a ride plus a field meet the next day. For a few years in the late 1960’s it had simultaneous starts in Vancouver and Bellingham, finishing 300 miles later at an all-night campout and party. A high point of the rally was the 50th anniversary in 1980, when 702 riders, many with passengers, braved the rain soaked streets.
The Caribou was conceived as a challenging event, and has always retained the tradition of a 300 mile endurance ride.

Event Comments: 2020 CARIBOU TRAILS REPORT
On Saturday, August 15, 2020, the GVMC held the 90th Annual Caribou Trails Road Ride. Because of the Covid-19 Pandemic this year’s Run was a one day event. The participants started arriving at the Clubhouse in the early morning eagerly awaiting the start of a long hot ride into the interior of B.C. and back to the Clubhouse. After sign-up and a light breakfast, a rider’s meeting was held at 7:15am and the first rider departed at 7:30am. The last rider left at 7:54am. In all there were 13 riders who went on a 685 kilometer timed route that took them along Hwy 1 to Hope, north up the Fraser Canyon to Lytton, over to Cache Creek, north to Hat Creek, west to Lillooet, east back to Lytton, south through the Fraser Canyon again, and back to the Clubhouse via Hwy 7.
The first rider back to the clubhouse arrived at 3:21pm and the last rider arrived at 5:10pm. After calculating start and finish times (with the help of Jim Brooke and Bill Talley) the following riders each won a Genuine Homemade Trophy.
1st Place – Drew Burns – 1 minute late 2nd Place – Gary Brown – 2 minutes late 3rd Place – Chris Carey – 6 minutes late The Rabbit – Bill Talley – 64 minutes early The Turtle – Richard Brown – 48 minutes late Drew Burns will have his name added to the Caribou Trails Trophy.
Instead of a checkpoint this year each rider had to guess the total distance of the route when they registered. We were going to use this as a tiebreaker but we didn’t need it. Chris Carey’s guess was only 2 kilometers off.
At the Clubhouse, there were some snacks and refreshments before the pizza was served for dinner followed by a chocolate cherry dump cake made by Julie Blackburn.
Thanks go out to Julie Blackburn for making muffins and dessert and handing out breakfast, snacks, refreshments, and dinner. Thanks also go to Margaret Cupples for helping out with breakfast and Marilyn Walsh for helping out with dinner.
Event income included 13 rider registrations at $20.00 each, two $20.00 donations to support the event and three $10.00 tickets for dinner only. After adding up the income and subtracting expenses the Club netted $125.00.
Thanks to all who participated in this, the 90th Annual Caribou Trails Run. Phil Blackburn Event Organizer
